The Blackstone Group was founded in 1985 by industry veterans Peter Peterson and Stephen Schwarzman, the once-secretive company laid bare its finances and corporate structure in filing one of the biggest IPOs in the history of mankind. The massive private equity firm owns stakes in more than 40 companies, manages hedge funds and other funds, and provides mergers and acquisitions and restructuring advice to corporate clients. Blackstone raised a record $15.6 billion private equity fund in 2006, then later upped its size to $20 billion. Not long after, the firm made one of the largest private equity transactions ever when it acquired Equity Office Properties Trust for some $39 billion in 2007.
